“Key to the City” is a project, an idea we came up with for Connect festival. We wanted to explore the limits of public space together with Friedel Schlör. Which obstacles actually restrict us physically and which are anchored in our minds? Whatever it is, with the shimmering Key to the City we give you the +100 Power Up for your next street session. This piece takes you over fences, shoots you into the air and offers you a free ride. It transports your board, opens new angles and even films you on its own. The obstacles disappear and the possibilities multiply. In both practical and symbolic form. With this steely mix of Ghostbusters trap and lightsaber, you have the power in your hand to create any kind of creative energy in urban spaces.
This world belongs to all of us, we’re free to enjoy it as we like. Well, as long as it’s not private property. Or if you have enough money to be allowed to use it. Or the right equipment, like a car, if you want to ride on a highway. Inner cities are a lot of the time mostly used to work, consume, or commute but those areas have the best conditions to be used as playgrounds, if you know how to unlock the full potential of their structure and know how to get around the limitations like fences or security guards. A skateboard is a tool to unlock the potential of urban spaces like a needle elicits the sound from a record. You overcome boundaries and find new possibilities. You turn a gray concrete edge into hours of pleasure and a closed company site into a fun hang out with the crew. You’re experiencing the city in a new way and opening up spaces you haven’t entered before.
That’s why we designed the “Key to the City” for this festival, to open up even more possibilities on a trip with your board. On the one hand, it is a multifunctional tool with concrete application possibilities, but on the other hand it is also an artistic examination of our living environment, which is intended to encourage us to question what fun is hidden there.
